Philosophy of Helping
The summer before I entered the human service program I was cleaning my old room at my parent’s house and stumbled upon my fifth grad yearbook. As I flipped through the pages I smiled at how little and innocent my classmates and I used to be. This little girl staring back at didn’t know about poverty, sickness, war, crimes or any social injustices. Her biggest daily dilemma was whether I’d pick choose ‘A’ or ‘B’ for lunch. At the end of the yearbook there was a page listing what all the fifth graders wanted to do when we grew up. Most of the kids put down astronaut, doctor or lawyer. I glanced to the bottom of the page and saw my career goal, mediator. It’s funny how my ten year-old self who had never gone through anything traumatic or scary wanted to facilitate others’ lives. I probably didn’t really know what mediator meant, but I knew it meant helping others. Even at the young age of 10 I knew I had the gift of helping and that’s what I wanted to do with my life.
Most things have changed drastically since I was ten; I am about to graduate college, I have been living on my own for four years, traveled to different countries, but one thing has stayed the same, my passion for helping others. I have learned many things from the human service program, things about people, cultures, the world and myself but the main thing I am taking away from the program is how everything and everyone is connected. I believe understanding this is crucial in order to be a good human service professional as well as a person because it has made me understand that there is a cause and affect to every action or inaction. If everyone were able to see how we are all connected it would encourage people to live with accountability, honesty and generosity. People have the power to change the way things are as well as the power to keep them the same. The human service major has given me the knowledge and tools in order to accomplish my passion for helping others and making positive changes in this world.
